Carmelo Giallombardo obtained his diploma with excellent results under the guide of Maestro Piero Farulli, viola player of the Quartetto Italiano. Subsequently, he was admitted into the three year School of High Specialization for viola of Maestro Hatto Beyerle at the Scuola di Musica of Fiesole. His musical path brought him to also study with the following teachers: Bruno Giuranna, Vladimir Mendelssohn and Wolfram Christ. He has been First viola of the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana and the "other First viola" of the Orchestra Regionale Toscana.
He collaborated with the Teatro Comunale of Florence and the Accademia Nazionale of Santa Cecilia. He performs as a soloist, in a viola/piano duo, and in a viola/hapsichord duo. He plays in prestigious venues and concert seasons in Italy and abroad. His interest in contemporary music has lead him to perform in Luxembourg (music of F.Donatoni), in Munich (Schloss Elmau, music of G.Scelsi), at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana (Sequence VI, music of L.Berio), and at GOG in Genoa ("Of the sound that doesn't make noise", music of Fanticini), and to collaborate with composers of international renown such as Salvatore Sciarrino, Stefano Scodanibbio, Fabrizio Fanticini, Helmut Lachenmann, Simone Fontanelli, Gyorgy Kurtag, Marco Uvietta, Terry Riley, Gianluca Ulivelli, Steve Reich, Xuyi, Giya Kancheli.
He has been the viola player of the Quartetto Prometeo since its founding in 1993 to 2010. As a member of the string quartet, he won awards in national and international contests ( " Prague Spring International Competition", "Concours International de Quator" in Bordeaux, and "Quartet International competition ARD" in Munich). He gave concerts and toured Europe, Japan, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil. He collaborated with soloists and chamber musicians of world renown: Massimo Quarta, Marianna Sirbu, Pavel Vernikov, Andrea Lucchesini, Ludmila Berlinskaia, Enrico Pace, Claudia Antonelli, Michele Campanella, Raphael Drouin, Paolo Beltramini, Marc Desmons, Vladimir Mendelsshon, Mario Brunello, David Geringas, Pier Narciso Masi.
He registered for BBC Radio 3, RAI Radio 3, OFR Austrian National Radio, and ARD of Munich. He recorded for BMG Ricordi Spa, Real Sound, Zig Zag, Limen Music, and Kairos. He has been an instructor of string quartet at the school "O.Vecchi" in Modena and a teacher of viola at the Scuola di Musica of Fiesole in Florence. He currently teaches viola and instructs string quartet as part of an instrument specialization course of the Furman University at "Accademia dell'Arte" Arezzo. He holds the chair of viola at the I.S.S.M. "Rinaldo Franci" in Siena. Starting in 2013, he is the viola player of the Quartetto Roma and of the contemporary ensemble "Policromie".
